As mentioned in The Chilean Experience Week 4 (which can be viewed here) this is the first Player of the Month posts which will happen every 4 weeks. So here is the first ever Player of the Month…
There were many stand out performers this month as Universidad de Chile had an exciting opening to the season. However , one stands out above the rest and he will be mentioned a bit later on. Let’s begin with the other 4 in contention for the award:
5. Gustavo Lorenzetti
Argentinean midfielder Lorenzetti has made a good start to the season this season. While not racking up goals and assists yet, his calm demeanour and passing abilities have made him an important part of the side this early on. However, he places lower down this month because of his tendency to go missing from games.
4. Juan Rodrigo Rojas
Despite only joining in the summer, Paraguayan midfielder Rojas has slowly begun establishing himself in the team, displacing Ezequiel Videla. He is a great protector of the backline and has proven that he has more to his game than Videla as he has shown a willingness to go forward and the ability to produce when he does so. His lack of playing time in the first few games hurts his ranking here though.
3. Charles Aránguiz
Already my favourite player, Aránguiz is one of the stars of this Universidad side. Creative and technically brilliant, he appears to be on a level above everyone else in the league. He dragged Universidad into the second round of the Copa Sudamericana this month but his sending off at Palestino has knocked his ranking a bit.
2. Ruben Farfán
The new signing from Union La Calera has been the most surprising star of the month. Hard working and skillful, Farfán is quickly becoming a favourite with the fans and Marco Antonio Figueroa. Changed the game against Rangers in his league debut and is one of the most best widemen in Chile right now. Came a close second this month.
And finally, the best Universidad de Chile player this month is… RAMON FERNÁNDEZ.
The Argentinean playmaker has been the heart and soul of the team this month and has contributed the most going forward. His fantastic vision and passing and clever movement have allowed him to dictate games from just behind Isaac Díaz up front. He has been the most consistent and best player at the club over the last 4 weeks and that is why Ramon Fernández is the first Player of the Month.
